SOUTH TEXAS COYOTE HUNT
With Steve Price and Henry Cannon

Finding a place to hunt.
Finding a place to hunt coyote is not hard. Even though neither Henry or myself had ever been to south Texas, we were able to find areas quickly by going to feed and farm supply stores in the area. The personnel at these stores have a relationship with most farmers and ranchers in the area and will know when there are coyote problems. All you have to do is ask. In our case, the feed store manager called the ranchers and provided the introductions and we were hunting that afternoon. I have used this method to find hunting areas for many years and it works well.
Guns used on the hunt.
Both Henry and I like small caliber rifles. Henry shoots a Remington Model 700 in 22-250 with a Leupold 4.5 X 14 Vari-X3. He loads his own ammo using Hornady 50 gr. V-max bullets. It is a great combination and deadly on dogs. I like the AR-15 style with a bull barrel and a Leatherwood 6X18 on top. I use Federal Premium V-SHOK .223 with 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip.
Calls used and methods.
I brought a CoyoteClub Western Combo (diaphragm), a CoyoteClub Rabbit-in-distress, and a CoyoteClub Deer-in-distress call. As it turned out, the fawns were not on the ground yet so the Rabbit-in-Distress was our call of choice, used in combination with the Western Combo diaphragms to simulate a rabbit being killed by coyotes. The sequence is several rabbit cries followed by excited barks and yelps from the coyotes on the hunt followed by more rabbit cries and more barks and yelps. Stop calling and wait for 15 or so minutes. In most cases a coyote would slip in by then, if not, call again and wait. This worked well for us on this hunt, even though the ranchers said mouth calls don't work in that area. We changed their mind about mouth calls.
Other Tips on Hunting South Texas.
1. Don't sit on the cactus. Every thing there has thorns.
2. Look our for rattlesnakes. We saw some big ones.
3. Bring repellant for redbugs and ticks. They aren't as bad as some places I've been, but can be a pain in the butt.
4. South Texas people are friendly and courteous people. Remember to act likewise if you want to be invited back.
5. Don't leave Texas without trying BBQ brisket. It is great.
